inside an end i cannot hear is an unsanctioned, biodegradable, site-specific installation inside an abandoned building in New York’s Hudson Valley. The building is part of a complex that once housed a thriving brick factory, forced to grind to a halt when they found they had emptied all local clay pits. Nestled at the end of a desire line, which strays from the walkway that links a forest to a river, it’s a good place to think about endings, and a good place to make your own meanings when they fail to appear along prescribed paths.
The form is inspired by Chladni figures, the symmetrical patterns formed when the vibrations of a sound meet sand or salt sprinkled on a plate. I reversed the process here, inventing a pattern that corresponds to an imaginary sound. I like to think it drones on in the dead of night, with only the snakes and owls as witness.

my hand is a moving image: one man says finitude is not a matter of opinion; the other waves him away. behind their voices, there’s a sound, but i can’t make it out. around their voices, there’s already a sound, and i can’t make it out.
